You’ll be GLAD to read this now that your kiddies are back at school! One question we always get asked is ‘What do we give our kids for school lunches?’ So we thought we would share our simple lunch box tips and ideas with you and giveaway a couple of $50.00 supermarket food voucher. Sound good?
Having three active and constantly hungry kiddies of our own means that we understand how full on it can be for busy families to do lunch prep and decide what and how to feed your kiddies. We always tell people to keep it simple, seasonal, use foods that contain minimal processed ingredients and additives and most importantly keep their lunch boxes full of goodies that will nourish their bodies to keep them alert and give them energy while at school.
Being a family of 5, we prefer to buy in in bulk. We find that the food lasts longer and we are doing our little part in the world to have less waste by using recyclable and reusable GLAD® Snap Lock® Resealable Bags. Imagine the amount of little chippy packets my family would accumulate over a decade of schooling! We always grab family size bags of nachos, popcorn or crackers and split them up for the week.
We add in some type of veggies like carrots, celery, broccoli or capsicum and pair that with a dip like hummus or pesto. It took us a few goes to get them chomping on their veggies, so don’t give up on the first or fifth try! Tip: Kids are likely to mirror what their parents do, so make sure they see you being a role model and eat what you want them to eat.
To keep things interesting we always do a rotation of sandwiches, pita pockets or wraps. Anything like this definitely needs to be put in a GLAD® Snap Lock® Resealable Bags to keep everything fresher for longer and minimise messy lunch boxes. The contents all depend on last night’s leftovers or mashed eggs with some leafy greens. If your kids are fussy with salads, try adding some stir-fry or roasted veggies instead.
We are big on lunch prep. Our homemade clean sweets take less than 30 mins to complete or if you’re rolling bliss bites, roll in the troops to help out. We do a rotation of superfood slice, raw slice, bliss bites and baking. We will also add some fresh seasonal fruit as well.
For a dairy-free sweet option, we make fruit compote topped with coconut cream. It’s super simple to make – prep some seasonal fruit or if you’re feeling flash add a bag of frozen mixed berries in a pot on medium heat, drizzle with pure maple syrup or honey and a squeeze of lemon. Let it cook for 6-8 mins or until it looks like a thick jam then pop a mini jar full in their lunch box or serve it over breaky. For more nourishing recipe ideas click here.
I hope this gives you a little inspiration for your year of school lunchin’. It can be a drag to prepare lunches every day, but remember to keep it fun, fresh and get the whole family involved because many hands make light work.
